The 2026 job market is rewarding professionals who adapt quickly, learn continuously, and navigate change with confidence. Employers still value experience, but they’re no longer treating tenure as the primary indicator of readiness. They’re looking for people who can shift gears as business needs evolve.
I see this every week with clients. One mid-career professional—let’s call her “Maria”—had 22 years in operations leadership. She worried her long tenure in one industry would limit her options. Instead, we reframed her story around adaptability: leading teams through change, learning new platforms, and adapting to business conditions. That repositioning opened doors to roles she once thought were out of reach.
The takeaway is simple:Your ability to adapt is now one of your strongest career assets. Highlight the moments you learned something new, stepped into ambiguity, or guided others through transition. Employers want to see how you grow, not just how long you’ve stayed.

Beyond the Career: Lessons from the Garden
Opening my garden during Garden Walk Buffalo on July 25 & 26 brought deep joy. I met people who love gardening. I heard their stories. I felt their excitement. Joy grows quickly when shared.
We connected with family and friends. We made new friends too. Visitors came from Australia, California, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and every corner of New York. Young adults stopped by and showed real interest. Their curiosity felt hopeful.
We asked for ideas on how to shape the space behind our barn garage. People jumped in. They sketched. They imagined. They dreamed out loud. Some promised to return next year to see what we create. Their energy reminded me that growth begins with imagination.
There were quieter moments too. Time with my sisters. Time to remember our mother and her love of flowers. We gathered around my new water feature. At its center sits the cast-iron water pump from her garden. Now it holds a place of honor.
It reminds me that love is eternal. Seasons change. New growth rises from old roots. Gardening, at its best, is a community experience. So is career development. We grow through connection. We grow through shared insight. We grow when others believe in our future.
